what is popup chorus AND WHAT IS POPUP BROADWAY!?

Do you like to sing? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to commit? Do you sing in the shower, in your car, or along to your favorite Broadway soundtrack?  Did you sing in college, at school or in church but do not have an opportunity to sing now? Do you miss singing? Do you need to sing?  If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you belong in PopUp Chorus!

At each of our PopUp Chorus events, we sing two iconic pop songs. At each of our PopUp Broadway! events, we sing two musical theater songs - one from a classic, Golden age musical, and one from a more contemporary show,  Wether you are singing with us in PopUp Chorus or PopUp Broadway, we ensure that everybody is welcome, regardless of ability.

We run the only chorus programs where you can attend when you are available  and skip it when you’re too busy. No audition, no weekly commitment. Just show up and sing two songs that you love, in either genre.

How does PopUp Chorus and PopUp Broadway work? Singers arrive and "learn" two pre-announced, familiar songs, which are later performed and recorded. Each event is guided by our engaging and encouraging conductors, Amelia Shull (PopUp Chorus ) and Allan Friedman (PopUp Broadway). When each song is ready (we embrace imperfection!) we do a final performance and make a music video. PopUp Chorus programs are never the same group of people twice. It’s simple, and could not be more fun, with participants ranging in age from 5-75!

PopUp Chorus has garnered attention from the media, as well as accolades from musicians liking the PopUp Chorus versions of their songs, including David Bowie, Zooey Deschanel, Duran Duran, They Might Be Giants, Sufjan Stevens and many more. “All hail the PopUp Chorus in Durham, NC. This defines joy,”  said They Might Be Giants upon seeing the PopUp Chorus version of their song, "Birdhouse In Your Soul."

Founded by Carrboro, NC based arts entrepreneur, Lauren Bromley Hodge, PopUp Chorus launched  in January 2014. Singing with PopUp Chorus is a great way to blow off steam, bust stress  and have fun, while also creating music and community. JOIN US!
