what is popup chorus and popup broadway?
Do you like to sing? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to commit? Do you sing in the shower or in your car? Did you sing once sing in college, at school or in church but do not have an opportunity to sing now? Do you miss singing? Do you love musical theater and pop music? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you belong with us!
We welcome ALL singers, regardless of ability. We even welcome people who do not consider themselves singers! To all those who had a music teacher, parent or someone else say to them - "you cannot sing," we say to you - come sing! Music is for everyone, it is in our DNA and it part of our shared humanity. We want everyone to enjoy the sense of connection and joy that singing together brings.
Music has the power to lead us out of isolation, offer comfort and joy, and be the backdrop to our greatest moments. Singing with others connects us more deeply to ourselves and everyone around us in a powerful chain reaction that inspires celebration, confidence and compassion. Come join us!
We run two series - PopUp Broadway and PopUp Chorus. PopUp Broadway is for fans of musical theater and PopUp Chorus is for those who love to sing pop, rock and indie songs. At each of our PopUp Broadway events, we sing at least two songs from a featured Broadway show or filmed musical and at our PopUp Chorus events, we sing iconic pop, rock or indie songs.
How do our events work? Singers arrive, greet each other, warm up, and then rehearse pre-announced songs which are later performed and filmed for social media. Each event is guided by an engaging and welcoming conductor who reminds our singers that we embrace imperfection! It’s simple, fun, inclusive of all vocal abilities, and welcomes participants from 10-90!
PopUp Chorus has garnered attention from the media, as well as accolades from musicians including David Bowie, Zooey Deschanel, Duran Duran, They Might Be Giants, Sufjan Stevens and many more. “All hail the PopUp Chorus in Durham, NC. This defines joy,” said They Might Be Giants upon seeing the PopUp Chorus version of their song, "Birdhouse In Your Soul."
Founded by Chapel Hill, NC based arts entrepreneur, Lauren Bromley Hodge, PopUp Chorus launched in January 2014 and PopUp Chorus Broadway began in 2016. Singing is a great way to blow off steam and have fun, while also creating music and community. JOIN US!
